Dates

October 16th to the 19th. The kick off event will take place at 3 pm at the University of Reykjavík with pizza and beer available. Students then have until noon on the 19th of October to work on and submit their solutions. With the winners being introduced around 4 pm same day. 

Data experts from Advania will also be hosting a two hour long workshop to help participants with their solutions. It will be hosted at HR M109, Tues 17.oct from 14-16. It will also be available online:

Eligibility

Anyone over the age of 18 who is currently enrolled in a college or a university (or within one year of graduation i.e. graduated 2022 or 2023) is welcome to attend! Prior programming experience is not required to participate. 

To be eligble for prizes, a team must be 1-5 people.

Project and Submission Requirements

Students need to fill in a pitch deck template that we will provide. Students are also allowed to submit a max 5 minute long video explaining their solution.

Judging Criteria and Winner Selection

The solutions will be judged mainly on novelty and connection to the available data sets.

There will be four different categories:

  1. Best visualisation of the data
  2. Most potential savings
  3. Most creative solution
  4. Most sustainable solution

Judging Criteria across all categories

  • Is the solution innovative/original?
  • How about the usability / feasibility of the solution?
  • Is it a solution that will help save money/lower carbon emissions?
  • Does it create value for the future?
Best visualization of data:
  • The goal of the best visualization of data is to offer a complete solution to a savings or environmental issue, where there is a clear connection to the data.
    Teams shall utilize at least one data set of those available in the Datathon (open data from Iceland’s institutions and Government), but the probability of winning increases if more than one data set is used in the solution. 

    Criteria:

    Direct connection to the data sets available

    Guidelines:

    At least one of the data sets available is used in the solution

    The team that wins the challenge will be awarded Bose headphones for every team member from Origo.
Most Potential Savings
  • The goal of the Most Potential Savings challenge is to find how the government can save money og man hours, with a clear connection to the data.
    Teams shall utilize at least one data set of those available in the Datathon (open data from Iceland’s institutions and Government). 
Criteria:

Direct connection to the data sets available

Savings in terms of money or man hours.

Guidelines:

At least one data set is used.

The team that wins the challenge will be awarded 10 hours of consultation from Marel's data team to help them further formulate their idea further or offer data support on a project of the winners chosing.
Most Creative Solution
  • In the most creative solution challenge, the goal is to come up with a solution to a savings problem without the conditions of the other categories. It can be based on existing or new ideas, as well as in data from those sets available in the Datathon (open data from Iceland’s institutions and Government).

There is no requirement for a direct connection to the data or for code to be submitted and therefore there are no direct conditions as in other categories.

However, the chances of winning can be increased the more datasets you utilize.

Guidelines:

No requirements in terms of data set usage.

The team that wins the challenge will be awarded ISK 200.000 from Íslandsbanki.

 

Most Sustainable Solution
  • In the most sustainable solution challenge, the goal is to come up with a solution to help combat environmental issues without the conditions of the other categories. It can be based on existing or new ideas, as well as in data from those sets available in the Datathon (open data from Iceland’s institutions and Government).
Criteria:

Direct connection to the data sets available

Savings in terms of carbon footprint

Guidelines:

At least one data set is used.

The team that wins the challenge will be awarded 10 hours of consultation from KPMG's data team to help them further formulate their idea further or offer data support on a project of the winners chosing.

 

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

- Both participants and winners of the Datathon own the rights to their ideas and final products. The organizers of the Datathon will not claim any rights to any of the team’s intellectual property. 

SUBMISSION OF FINAL PRODUCT

- Participants need to have turned in their final products before 12 pm on the 19th of October 2023. If a submission is made after that time or not at all the team is disqualified from the Datathon.

Hackathon participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the hackathon without a refund (if applicable) at the discretion of the hackathon organisers.
